Mindelo, São Vicente

← Back to the full São Vicente guide

Mindelo, wrapped around a great natural harbour on São Vicente, is the cultural and musical capital of Cape Verde — a stylish, sociable port city with a creative energy you won't find anywhere else in the islands.

What to see

Stroll the waterfront and the Rua de Lisboa, admire the colonial buildings and the replica of Lisbon's Belém tower, and browse the fish and produce markets. In the evening the city's bars fill with live morna, coladeira and cola San Jon. Right in town, Laginha beach offers an easy city swim.

When to visit

Mindelo throws the country's biggest Carnival in February and the Baía das Gatas music festival in August — either is an unforgettable time to be here, though beds book out fast.

A walking route through the centre

Start at the replica Torre de Belém on the waterfront, follow Rua Lisboa past the pastel colonial facades to the Mercado Municipal (mornings are best), then cut through to the fish market on the bay, where tuna the size of children are auctioned off the boats. Loop back via Praça Amílcar Cabral under the banyans, and finish with a coffee watching the harbour — the whole circuit takes a leisurely two hours and shows you why Mindelo considers itself the cultural capital of the country.

Music: where to actually hear it

Live morna and coladeira happen nightly, not in concert halls but in small bars and restaurant courtyards around the centre — ask anywhere "onde tem música hoje?" and you will be pointed right. Sets start late (22:00 onward) and the quality is astonishing for rooms of thirty people. February's Carnival and the August Baía das Gatas festival are the big set-pieces.
