Mindelo: the music capital

Mindelo on São Vicente is the country's cultural heart and the best place for live music. Small bars around the old centre host morna, coladeira and jazz-inflected sets most nights, often with superb musicians playing to a few dozen people. This is where you go to understand why Cape Verdean music travels so far.

Santa Maria: beach bars and resort nightlife

Santa Maria on Sal is the most tourist-friendly night out: a walkable strip of restaurants, beach bars and a handful of late venues, with live bands, occasional DJ nights and a relaxed, mixed crowd. It is the easiest place to go out independently if you are not fluent in Portuguese or Creole.

Praia and the other islands

Praia on Santiago has the most local, energetic scene, strong on funaná and Cape Verdean pop, with clubs that fill after midnight. On Boa Vista nightlife is largely resort-based, with a little more life in Sal Rei. On the quieter islands, an evening out means a bar, a guitar and conversation — which is often the best version.

Practical tips

Nothing starts early. Live music often begins after 22:00 and clubs fill well after midnight. Dress is casual but neat; carry small notes in escudos as many bars do not take cards. Use registered taxis to get home, especially in Praia and Mindelo.

• Carry cash — see money and costs.
• Take a taxi back after dark rather than walking unfamiliar streets.
• Try grogue, but pace yourself — it is strong.
