Most trips depart from Santa Maria on Sal, which has the largest fleet and the widest choice, and from Sal Rei on Boa Vista. Smaller operations run from Mindelo on São Vicente and from Praia on Santiago.

From March to May, boat trips double as whale-watching excursions, with humpbacks calving offshore. Between June and October, some evening boats connect to turtle beaches. Year-round, dolphins are a frequent and delightful bonus.
