Cape Verde is a serious destination for birders. Isolation has produced a set of endemic species found nowhere else on earth, the islands sit on migration routes between Europe and Africa, and important seabird colonies cling to the remoter cliffs and islets — all with a fraction of the birding traffic of the Canaries.
The endemic species
The star birds include the Raso lark, confined to one tiny uninhabited islet; the Cape Verde warbler; the Cape Verde swift; the Cape Verde sparrow; the Iago sparrow; and the Cape Verde buzzard and kestrel. Several are range-restricted and threatened, so sightings feel genuinely special.
Seabirds
The archipelago holds internationally important breeding populations, including Cape Verde shearwater, Boyd's shearwater, Cape Verde storm petrel, red-billed tropicbirds and brown boobies. Where to go
Santiago is the most reliable island for the Cape Verde warbler and the buzzard, especially in wetter valleys and around Serra Malagueta. São Nicolau and its Monte Gordo park hold endemics in the uplands. Maio's salt flats and the wetlands of Sal and Boa Vista are excellent for waders and migrants, and Santo Antão's valleys offer good general birding alongside the hiking.
When to visit
Autumn and spring bring migrants passing between Europe and Africa, while seabird breeding peaks in the warmer months. Resident endemics can be found year-round, so any time works for the specialities — although the cooler, clearer months are more comfortable for the inland walking involved.
