Sal is the hub: Kite Beach near Santa Maria is world-famous, with reliable cross-shore wind, schools for beginners and flat-water and wave options. Boa Vista also has excellent conditions, especially around Praia de Chaves. The prime wind season runs roughly November to May, with the strongest breezes in the winter months.
Diving and snorkelling
The water is warm (22–26°C) with good visibility, volcanic drop-offs, wrecks and abundant fish. Sal and Boa Vista have the most established dive centres, and Santa Maria is the easiest base for beginners. Snorkelling is rewarding in sheltered bays such as Sal Rei on Boa Vista.
Surfing and other activities
Surf breaks exist on several islands, best in the winter swell season, though the scene is smaller and less organised than the kite scene. Also popular: whale-watching boat trips (March–May), fishing charters, and the surreal float in the salt lake at Pedra de Lume.
