Between roughly March and May, humpback whales gather in the warm waters off Boa Vista to breed and calve — making the island one of the best places in Cape Verde to see them.
When to go
The season runs from about March to May, with April often the peak. Outside these months your chances drop sharply, so plan your trip accordingly if whales are a priority.
What to expect
Boat trips leave from Sal Rei harbour and last three to four hours. With luck you’ll see whales breach, roll and slap their tails; mothers with calves are a common and moving sight. The sea can be choppy, so take precautions if you’re prone to seasickness.
Go responsibly
Choose a licensed, responsible operator that keeps a respectful distance and doesn’t crowd the animals. The same waters are also great for spotting turtles and, in season, this pairs well with a turtle-nesting tour.
Why the whales come to Boa Vista
The shallow shelf between Boa Vista, Sal and Maio is one of the North Atlantic humpback's only known breeding grounds — the other major one lies off the Caribbean. Females calve in the warm, protected water and spend weeks fattening their calves before the long migration north. That is why sightings here are often intimate: mothers idling with newborns, escort males slapping fins, and — on the best days — full breaches close enough to hear the impact.
The trip itself
Boats leave Sal Rei harbour mid-morning for trips of two to three hours, usually with a marine biologist or trained guide aboard. Success rates in March and April exceed 90% with most operators. The swell can be lively: take a tablet an hour before departure if you are remotely prone to seasickness, sit midship, and keep your eyes on the horizon between sightings.
