Most people come to Cape Verde for the beaches — and miss the extraordinary walking. The green, mountainous islands offer cobbled mule paths, volcanic craters and cliff trails that rank among the best hiking in the Atlantic.
Santo Antão: the hiking island
Santo Antão is Cape Verde's walking capital. The classic route is the descent of the Paul Valley from the Cova crater — a lush ravine of sugar cane and terraces. The cliff path from Ponta do Sol to Fontainhas is short, spectacular and unforgettable.
Fogo: climbing an active volcano
Pico do Fogo (2,829 m) is the country's highest peak and its most exciting climb: three to four hours up loose volcanic scree, then a fast sliding descent. You start from Chã das Caldeiras, a village inside the crater.
São Nicolau: quiet mountain trails
Monte Gordo Natural Park offers superb, uncrowded walking through terraced farmland into misty upland forest — one of the country's best-kept secrets, with ancient dragon trees nearby.
Santiago and Brava
Serra Malagueta on Santiago has green ridge trails and big coastal views, while tiny Brava — the 'island of flowers' — offers gentle, blossom-lined paths and the memorable descent to Fajã d'Água.
Difficulty, seasons and guides
Most classic routes are non-technical but steep, long and often on uneven cobbles — good shoes matter more than anything. The cooler, clearer months of November to March are the most comfortable. Local guides are inexpensive, greatly improve route-finding, and put money directly into mountain communities.

Santo Antão, without question — its valleys and cliff paths are the finest walking in the country. Fogo (volcano) and São Nicolau follow.
Do you need a guide to hike in Cape Verde?
Not always, but a local guide is inexpensive, helps with route-finding on unmarked paths and supports mountain communities. For Pico do Fogo it's strongly recommended.

November to March, when it's cooler and clearer. Summer hiking is possible but hotter and more humid on the green islands.
