The trails
The park's classic route drops from the ranger post on the main road down the Principal valley toward the west coast — around three hours of descending path through cloud-brushed ridges, terraced smallholdings and hamlets where the trail is the only street. Shorter loops circle the summit ridges for the views; the ambitious traverse toward Tarrafal makes a full, superb day. Paths are rough and occasionally faint: a local guide (arranged at the park office or through guesthouses) is money well spent.
