How long is the flight to Cape Verde?

Flight times at a glance

Cape Verde sits off the coast of West Africa at roughly the same latitude as Senegal, but almost due south of Portugal. That geography explains the flight times: short from Iberia, moderate from northern Europe, and awkward from North America. Which airport you land at matters as much as the hour count: Cape Verde has four international gateways, and they serve different islands.

Distances are great-circle distances to Sal (SID); Boa Vista is roughly 60 km further and Praia about 200 km further. *Times marked with an asterisk are estimated from distance, because direct service from those airports is not a fixed year-round route.

Is Cape Verde long haul?

Not from Europe, on any ordinary reading of the term. There is no single industry definition — airlines and tour operators draw the line in different places, often somewhere around six or seven hours — but at roughly six hours from the UK and under four from Lisbon, Cape Verde sits below the threshold most European operators use, and it is sold as a winter sun destination rather than a long-haul one.

Distance makes the point more clearly than any label. From London Gatwick:

• Gran Canaria: about 2,880 km. The familiar winter sun benchmark.
• Sal, Cape Verde: about 4,330 km. Around 1,450 km further, for roughly two extra hours in the air — and about 11 degrees closer to the equator, which is what you are actually paying for.
• Barbados: about 6,760 km. Half as far again, with a four-hour time difference on top.

Two practical consequences follow. Cabin service and seat pitch are usually short-haul standard rather than long-haul, because much of the capacity is flown by holiday carriers — worth knowing before a six-hour flight. And there is effectively no jet lag, which is the real difference between this and a Caribbean trip of similar cost. From North America the picture reverses: see flying from the US and Canada below.

From the UK and Ireland

The UK is Cape Verde's largest northern European source market, and the route network reflects that. Expect roughly six hours in the air to Sal or Boa Vista — the two islands with the international airports that take most holiday traffic.

A few points about UK departures:

• Much of the capacity is package-led. Flights are often operated by holiday carriers rather than scheduled airlines, which means availability follows the winter sun season and can thin out considerably in the quieter months.
• Regional airports matter here. Departures are not concentrated on London the way they are for many destinations, so it is worth checking Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol as well.
• Flight-only can be harder to find than the package. If flight-only prices look poor, price the package for comparison — sometimes it really is cheaper.
• Baggage rules vary a lot between charter and scheduled operators. Check before paying, not after.

Ireland has more limited direct options, so many travellers connect through the UK or Lisbon.

Because nearly all UK charter capacity points at two islands, the real question for most British travellers is not how long the flight is but whether to book Sal or Boa Vista.

From mainland Europe

Portugal is the shortest hop and the main gateway. From Lisbon the flight is well under four hours, and the route operates year-round rather than seasonally, which makes it the most reliable way in when direct charters are not running.

From the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany and Italy, direct flights exist but tend to be seasonal and concentrated in the winter sun months, roughly November to April. Outside that window you will usually be connecting.

One planning point that catches people out: because so much European capacity is seasonal, the answer to "can I fly direct?" depends as much on when you travel as on where you leave from. From the US and Canada

Direct service from North America has historically operated from Boston, reflecting the very large Cape Verdean community in New England, at roughly six and a half hours. This route has come and gone over the years, so treat it as something to verify rather than assume.

For most North American travellers the practical route is a connection through Lisbon, which adds a European hop to the itinerary and typically makes it an overnight journey. Total travel time from the US east coast is realistically in the region of 14–18 hours door to door depending on the connection.

Note that this makes Cape Verde a longer trip from New York than from London — the opposite of what many people assume from looking at a map. The map of the archipelago shows why: the islands sit far further east than most North American travellers picture them.

Flying via Lisbon or another hub

If there is no direct flight on your dates, Lisbon is almost always the sensible connection. It has the most frequent service to Cape Verde and connects well to the rest of Europe.

Two things to weigh up:

Through-ticket versus self-transfer. On a single booked ticket, the airline is responsible if a delay makes you miss the onward flight. If you book two separate tickets to save money, you carry that risk yourself — and a missed connection to Cape Verde can mean a day or more of waiting, because frequencies are low. Given how few daily flights operate, this risk is meaningfully higher here than on a European route.

Connection times. Allow more than the airline's stated minimum, especially if you are changing terminals or clearing security again. Two hours is comfortable; the minimum on the ticket often is not.

Between the islands

Your flight time to the country is only part of the answer if you are not staying on the island you land on. Domestic hops are short — typically well under an hour between the main islands — but the connection around them is what takes the time.

The important caveat: domestic frequencies are limited, schedules change, and delays are common. Do not book a domestic flight or a ferry on the same day as your international departure home. If you are combining islands, read island hopping first — the routing shapes what is realistic far more than the flying time does.

The time difference works for you

Cape Verde is on UTC−1 and does not observe daylight saving time. That gives it one of the gentlest time differences of any winter sun destination:

• From the UK: one hour behind in winter, two hours behind in British Summer Time.
• From most of mainland Europe: two hours behind in winter, three in summer.
• From the US east coast: four hours ahead in winter, three in summer.

In practice this means essentially no jet lag from Europe. You land, you have dinner at a normal hour, and the first day of your holiday is a real day rather than a write-off — which is a genuine advantage over a Caribbean trip of similar cost. Planning your travel day

• Check which island you are actually flying to. Sal (SID) and Boa Vista (BVC) take most holiday traffic; Praia (RAI) serves Santiago and the south; São Vicente (VXE) serves Mindelo.
• Confirm entry requirements before departure. Cape Verde operates an online pre-registration and airport security fee system, and it must be dealt with in advance. See visa and entry requirements.
