Who we are
Cape Verde Islands is an independent travel-information website run by Chris Vogel, based in the Netherlands, who is responsible for the processing of personal data described in this policy. You can reach us any time via our contact page.
What we collect
Cape Verde Islands is a simple informational website and we collect as little data as possible. We do not ask you to create an account and we do not knowingly collect personal information. Like most websites, our hosting provider may record standard, anonymised server logs (such as approximate location, browser type and pages visited) for security and performance, and — only if you accept — we use Google Analytics to understand which guides are most useful. Google Analytics records things like the pages you view, roughly how long you spend on them, your approximate location (country or region, not your address), your device and browser, and how you arrived at the site. We have IP anonymisation switched on.
Cookies
Three types of cookie can be involved. Essential ones keep the site secure and remember your cookie choice. Analytics cookies, set by Google Analytics, tell us which guides people read and where they lose interest, so we know what to improve. Partner cookies may be set by Stay22 and booking sites when one of our accommodation maps loads (see below). Nothing beyond the essentials is set until you accept or click to open a map: when you first arrive, analytics is switched off by default and maps are not loaded.
You can decline in the cookie banner and still read every guide in full. To change your mind later, clear this site’s data in your browser settings and the choice will be offered again. We do not use advertising cookies on this site and we do not build advertising profiles.
How we use information
We use anonymised, aggregated data only to keep the site secure and to improve our content — for example, to see which guides are popular and where we can add more detail. We do not sell your data, and we do not use it to build advertising profiles.
Third parties and external links
Our site is hosted by Netlify and uses Google Analytics 4, which runs only if you accept analytics cookies. These providers process data on our behalf under their own privacy terms. Our guides also link to external websites (such as airlines, ferry operators and official government pages). We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those external sites, so please review their policies.
Affiliate links
Some links on this site are affiliate links to travel companies, such as tour operators, booking sites or excursion providers, often managed through an affiliate network. At the moment this means GetYourGuide (tours and excursions) and Stay22 (accommodation, with prices from booking sites such as Booking.com). We do not place advertising cookies on this website. Some guides show an accommodation map from Stay22. If you accept cookies in our banner, these maps load automatically; if you decline, a map only loads when you click to show it. Once a map has loaded, Stay22 and the booking sites behind it may process data and set cookies under their own privacy policies, for example to record that a booking came through our site. When you click an affiliate link, however, the company or its affiliate network may set a cookie or use a tracking parameter on their website to record that your visit came from us, so they can pay us a commission if you book. That processing is covered by their own privacy policy. We receive reports about clicks and bookings for our own links, but not your name, contact details or payment details. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct or delete any personal data held about you. As we collect little to no personal data, there is usually nothing to act on — but if you have any privacy question or request, just contact us and we'll help.
