Cesária Évora sang for decades in Mindelo's bars and on visiting ships for drinks and tips, raising children alone and twice giving up music entirely. Her break came absurdly late: discovered in her late forties, she recorded in Paris, and 1992's Miss Perfumado — with "Sodade" — sold hundreds of thousands of copies. A Grammy followed in 2004.
