Monte Verde, São Vicente

← Back to the full São Vicente guide

Monte Verde, at 750 m, is the highest point on São Vicente and the best viewpoint on the island — on a clear day you can see Mindelo's harbour, the whole of São Vicente and the mountains of Santo Antão across the channel.

Getting up

A rough road winds to the top, so most visitors go by 4x4 or on an island tour; fitter travellers can walk. The upper slopes are often greener and mistier than the dry lowlands, catching moisture from the trade winds.

Tips

Go on a clear morning for the best views and bring a windproof layer — the summit is breezy and cooler than town. It pairs well with a loop taking in Calhau and São Pedro.

The view from 750 metres

Monte Verde is São Vicente's rooftop, and on a clear day the summit panorama takes in the whole island in one slow turn: Mindelo curled around its bay, the channel across to the mountains of Santo Antão, the beach at Baía das Gatas, and the dry brown interior fading to Calhau's volcanic cones. The name — "green mountain" — is earned only in the moist months, when trade-wind cloud snags the summit and the upper slopes flush briefly green.

Walking or driving up

A cobbled road switchbacks to the summit antennas, so you can drive or taxi up in twenty minutes from Mindelo. Walkers usually start where the main road passes the mountain's base and climb the road or the older paths — a stiff 1.5–2 hour ascent with the reward of descending toward Baía das Gatas. Cloud can swallow the top without warning; go on a clear morning and check the summit is visible before committing.

Practical information

  • Taxi from Mindelo with waiting time: agree ~€20–25 round trip.
  • Mornings are clearest; afternoons often cloud over.
  • It is windy and several degrees cooler up top — bring a layer.
  • The protected area holds endemic plants; stay on tracks.
  • Combine with Baía das Gatas and Calhau.
