The lagoon
A ring of volcanic rock shields Baía das Gatas from the open Atlantic, creating a broad, shallow natural pool where the water warms quickly and stays glassy even when the ocean outside is heaving. It is the safest swimming on São Vicente and ideal for children — you can wade far out on clean sand, and snorkellers find fish along the rocky rim.
