São Pedro, São Vicente

💨 Windy bay🪁 Kite spot✈️ By the airport

São Pedro lies in a broad bay on the south-west of São Vicente, right beside the airport, with a long pale beach, a working fishing village and the mountains of Santo Antão rising across the channel. It is beautiful, exposed and almost always windy.

01The bay and beach

The bay and beach

The beach is wide and long, backed by dunes and dry hills, with the bulk of Monte Cara at one end. The setting is superb — few places give you such a clear view across the channel to Santo Antão — but this is an exposed Atlantic bay, and the wind and swell mean it is more a place for walking, watching and wind sports than for casual swimming.

02Wind sports

Wind sports

The reliable wind funnelling through the channel makes São Pedro a known spot for kitesurfing and windsurfing, particularly in the winter months. It is far less developed than Sal, so bring your own kit and local knowledge, and be aware of the current in the bay.

03The village

The village

São Pedro itself is a small fishing community, with boats drawn up on the sand and a few simple places to eat. It has a quiet, slightly end-of-the-road feel, despite being minutes from the international airport.

Frequently asked questions

Can you swim at São Pedro?

Take care. The bay is exposed with wind, swell and current, so it suits walking and wind sports more than casual swimming.

Is São Pedro good for kitesurfing?

Yes — the channel funnels reliable wind, especially in winter. It is undeveloped compared with Sal, so bring your own equipment.
