The botanical garden
The Jardim Botânico Nacional was established to conserve and study Cape Verdean flora, including the endemic species found nowhere else on earth. Paths wind between labelled beds of dragon trees, euphorbias, aloes and native shrubs, alongside agricultural research plots trialling crops for the islands' difficult climate. It is modest by international standards but genuinely interesting, and blessedly cool.
The Órgãos valley
The surrounding valley is one of Santiago's most fertile, with terraced fields of sugar cane, bananas and vegetables climbing the slopes and mountain ridges rising behind. It is excellent walking country and rewarding for birdwatching, with several endemic bird species present in the greener areas.
