Half an hour above the heat of Praia, Rui Vaz sits high in the Serra do Pico with air ten degrees cooler and views that stretch across the interior of Santiago. It is the easiest escape from the capital and a favourite weekend spot for Praia residents.
The setting
The village clings to a green mountainside beneath the pyramid-shaped peak of Monte Xota, surrounded by terraced smallholdings, pine and eucalyptus. The contrast with the dry coast below is startling — mist rolls through, the vegetation is thick and it can feel almost alpine on a cloudy day.
What to do
This is a place for walking and looking. Trails lead up toward the peak and along the ridges, with big views over valleys and out to the sea on clear days.
