Sal has the most developed diving scene in Cape Verde, and for good reason: sheltered training areas right off Santa Maria, dramatic volcanic topography on the west coast, several accessible wrecks and warm water year-round. If you want to dive in Cape Verde, this is the easiest place to do it.
The main dive sites
Sites off Santa Maria bay are shallow, sheltered and ideal for training and first dives, with plenty of fish drawn to the fishing activity. The west coast around Buracona offers caves, arches and lava formations, including the well-known cave dives. Several wrecks lie within reach, and drift dives along the coast reward experienced divers. Boats often depart from Palmeira.
Conditions and season
Water sits between about 22°C and 26°C, so a 3–5 mm suit is plenty. Visibility is frequently 20–30 m. The calmest and clearest period runs from roughly May to November; in the windy winter months the exposed west coast sites can be closed, though the sheltered south side usually still works. Currents can be strong on exposed sections, so follow the briefing.
Dive centres and courses
Several established centres operate in Santa Maria, offering try-dives, PADI and SSI courses, guided dives and equipment hire. Standards are generally good; look for well-maintained kit, small groups and clear safety briefings. Book courses ahead in the winter high season.
