The remote-work visa

Cape Verde introduced a dedicated remote-working visa aimed at people employed or self-employed outside the country, typically allowing stays of several months with the possibility of extension, subject to proof of income, insurance and a clean record. Internet and connectivity

Connectivity is good on Sal, Santiago and São Vicente, adequate on Boa Vista, and patchy on the smaller and mountainous islands. A local SIM with data is cheap and makes a reliable backup for video calls — see SIM cards and internet. Assume you will need a plan B for important meetings.

The best bases

Mindelo is the most liveable: a walkable city with cafés, restaurants, culture and live music every night. Santa Maria suits kitesurfers who want the beach outside the door and a steady flow of other travellers. Praia offers the best infrastructure and services if you need a capital city. Longer-term apartment rentals are widely available in all three.

Costs and daily life

Living costs sit between West African and southern European levels — cheaper than Lisbon, more expensive than Dakar. An apartment, local food and occasional excursions are very manageable; imported goods are not. The honest downsides

• No large coworking scene — expect cafés, hotels and apartments.
• Power cuts happen on smaller islands; have a power bank and backup data.
• Inter-island travel takes time and can be disrupted.
• Imported goods and some services are expensive.
• Medical facilities are limited outside Praia and Mindelo.
