Fajã is São Nicolau's agricultural heartland — a broad, fertile valley beneath Monte Gordo where terraced fields of maize, beans, cassava and sugar cane climb the slopes, and ancient dragon trees stand among the crops.
The valley
Water draining off the Monte Gordo massif makes this the greenest part of the island. Smallholdings are worked by hand, irrigation channels run between terraces, and the villages scattered through the valley have a settled, prosperous-by-local-standards feel. It is quietly beautiful and almost entirely unvisited by tourists.
Dragon trees
The Fajã area is the best place in Cape Verde to see dragoeiros — the rare, umbrella-shaped dragon trees whose red sap was once traded as "dragon's blood". Some specimens here are centuries old, and their silhouettes against the terraces are one of São Nicolau's defining images.
Walking and access
The valley is excellent walking country, with paths linking hamlets and climbing toward Monte Gordo Natural Park. Routes are not always obvious, so a local guide helps — see our hiking guide. Aluguers run from Ribeira Brava, though not frequently.
