Ribeira Grande — known locally as Povoação — is the largest town on Santo Antão's green northern coast, wedged where a steep valley meets the sea. It is not a resort and makes no attempt to be one, but it is the practical heart of the island and a useful base for walkers.
The town
Colourful houses stack up the valley sides, a river bed runs through the middle, and the streets are busy with school children, market traders and aluguers loading up. There is a church, a small market, a few bars and simple restaurants. It is the place to sort out money, supplies and transport before heading into the valleys.
Using it as a base
Ribeira Grande sits within easy reach of everything in the north: the Paul Valley is a short ride east, Ponta do Sol and the Fontainhas cliff path a few minutes north, and the Cova crater road climbs behind.
