Maio's greatest asset is its beaches: kilometre after kilometre of empty, pale-gold sand, often with not another soul in sight. If you want wild, undeveloped coast, few places in Cape Verde match it.
Where to go
Ponta Preta, south of the capital, is a vast sweep of dune-backed sand often rated the island's finest. Praia do Morro runs for kilometres near the resorts, while Bitche Rotcha in town is handy for an easy swim. The water is warm and clear, though open stretches can have currents.
Tips
Bring your own water, shade and snacks — most beaches have no facilities at all. A 4x4 island tour is the best way to reach the remoter sands.
Beach by beach
Bitxe Rotxa (town): sheltered, swimmable, five minutes from a cold drink. Praia do Morro: the long spectacular one — dunes, space, the occasional fisherman. Ponta Preta (north-west): wild, dune-backed and utterly empty. Praia Gonçalo and the east-coast bays near Calheta: turquoise coves between fishing hamlets. You can walk for an hour on most of them without meeting anyone — that is the island's luxury.
Swimming and turtle rules
The west and town-side beaches are generally the calmest; the north and east catch more wind and swell, so ask locally and never swim alone on the remote stretches.
