Most visitors to Fogo see the black lava fields of the crater and assume the whole island looks like that. Mosteiros, on the north-eastern coast, proves otherwise: this is the green side, where cloud catches the mountain, coffee and fruit grow in volcanic soil and the sea crashes onto black sand.
The town and setting
Mosteiros sits below steep slopes that trap moisture from the trade winds, making this the wettest and greenest part of Fogo. Mango, banana, breadfruit and coffee grow around the town, and the contrast with the arid south-west around São Filipe could hardly be sharper.
Coffee and agriculture

The coast
The shoreline here is dramatic: black volcanic sand, rock pools and heavy Atlantic surf. Swimming is generally unsafe on the open coast, but the coastline is superb for walking and photography, and the local fishing fleet works out of the small harbour.
